Episode 120: The Gentle Art of Being Weird With Todd Purse

Art by Todd Purse, 2023. Thanks Todd. I love that little guy.

Todd Purse is a really interesting guy and is a lot of fun. He also has a very interesting, view of the paranormal or the Other, that he expresses in a series of really beautiful, gentle comics.

He did the cover art for this episode, and it features his little Goblin who goes about exploring the nature of consciousness and reality with a merry band of other weird, wonderful creatures.

We talk about comics, folklore, the nature of reality, the paranormal, UFOs, and everything up and down and in between.

We also talk a little bit about a web comic that Zak and I used to do together about, uh, 24 or 25 years ago. It, too, dealt with the nature of reality, the paranormal, consciousness and Zen. It was called “Journey to the West.”

Since we talked about it,, I had Zak find one his pieces of art from the comic to put in the show notes….you’ll find it down below.

I think this was the final piece of art he did for it. Sifu is in the upper right—that’s Bigfoot. He’s also the main character, Jack’s Zen master. Jack’s the blue coyote. Max is the alien with the wizard hat, Briar is his girfriend, the cute cat with the weird creature in her arms. That creature is Bitsy—she’s a made up cryptid called a “Cave Chicken.” Bitsy’s poking at Chupacabra, and Spooky Fox is next to Jack. She’s a paranormal investigator. And then there’s the Men in Black in the opposite corner from Bigfoot and Max’s UFO is flying above. Art by Zak Kramer 2000.
