Episode 154: The Season of the Witch with Susan Demeter

Surrealist collage of witchy images.

“Season of the Witch” Mixed Media Collage with Found Objects. 2025 Barbara Fisher

Susan is back and we talk about all kinds of Witchy things. You know, like becoming crones. Cats, ghosts, ghost cats, UFOs, ancestors, household spirits. And books. Goddesses. Apports. Fairies. And magic. Spells. And tarot cards.

Books mentioned in this episode include Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky and Animal Reactions to UFOs by Linda Zimmerman. And the Tarot decks Susan mentions are Witch Sister Tarot by Julia Jeffrey and Tarot of the Hidden Realm by Julia Jeffrey and Barbara Moore. .

I’m not going to say much more about this episode—the topics just range far and wide. Basically, you get to listen in to two Sister Witches sit together at a virual kitchen table and sip tea, and catch up with each other’s doings.

I will quickly explain a bit about the art I made for this episode. A new thing I’ve been doing in my collages these days is I use bits and pieces of watercolor paintings that didn’t turn out so great in the backgrounds—this gives great texture and depth to the collage. Then, I use pieces of paintings I’ve photographed and then printed out on various types of paper for different color and texture effects. And as I always have, I use bits of book illustrations, old woodcut illustrations from the 17th to the 19the centuries, as well as bits of illumination art from medieval handcopied manuscripts and books. I also use monoprinted leaves and other gel-printed bits and bobs as well as leaves I’ve made from layered and painted papers that I use dies to cut into leaf shapes. For these particular die cuts I used Fortean Times magazine pages layered over with printed tissue paper and tinted with transparent paint. I added painted details here and there, and then I glued jewelry bits and bobs to the finished collage for fun.

Blessed Samhain to all!
