Episode 159: Fungi, Fairies and Orbs with Kate Rae
“Fairies, Fungi and Foxfire.” 2026, by Barbara Fisher. Mixed media collage: watercolor, ink, acrylics, woodcut images and vintage book illustrations on canvas board. There are original pieces of watercolor and ink work on watercolor paper in here,: especially the elfin face, amanita muscaria and background landscapes. I also used also many images from paintings and collages I made that I photographed, resized and used—this way I can use images over and over, connecting my works together over time.
This episode with Kate Rae of the Hare in the Hawthorn podcast was jolly fun—we talked primarily about the connections between mushrooms, fungi, fairies, crop circles, cattle mutilations, UFOs and anomalous light orbs. We might have talked too much about some of these topics because something caused us both to be kicked off the internet at the same time. I had been in the middle of explaining about our family’s “Goddess of Parking” and our way of invoking her assistance in finding a parking place when we were both dropped. When we picked up the conversation, we were still laughing and I forgot to finish the invocation. Here it is in full in case you want to call upon Squat yourselves. (Squat is the name of our Parking Goddess.) It goes like this:
”Hiya, Squat! How’s it going? We’re doing okay, and hey, you’ve been doing a great job down here helping the folks find parking spots in crowded places. I was wondering if you could help us out with a parking spot close to (insert location here.) It would be great if you could do that for us and we’d be so happy if you did. Thank you so much, Squat. Have a great day (or night, or whatever)!
And when you come upon the parking space, you kiss your first and second fingers of your right hand and fling that kiss up to the sky with a saucy wave and call out a cheery, “Thank you! Toodles!”
So there you are. Love to you all, I hope you enjoy this episode and the art!
