Episode 128: Women Of The Paranormal With Alex Matsuo

“Women of the Paranormal” Collage on paper by Barbara Fisher, 2023.

So how many women can you name who contributed to the history of paranormal investigation?

Loraine Warren? Anyone else?

Maybe—if you’re a fan of parapsychology—Louise B. Rhine?

Maybe…..the Fox Sisters, if you’re into the history of Spiritualism?

Or maybe not—-because until very recently, there was no book that gathered biographical information about the women who contributed to the development of what we think of as paranormal investigation in the 21st century.

Alex Matsuo saw that there was a need for such a book, and she just jumped into researching the history of women in the development of our modern paranormal community. She thought she’d find maybe a dozen names—but once she started digging in the libraries, she found over 38 women—and is still finding more.

Alex’s book, Women of the Paranormal gives us overviews of the lives of the first 38 women she uncovered, and the stories in the volume are all fascinating and interesting.

In this episode she shares stories of the women, as well as how she found them, where she found them, and what she did when she found them.

I hope you enjoy listening to Alex’s stories—and hopefully, if she piques your interest in these women, you’ll pick up the book and learn about all of them.

As she says, “Paranormal history is women’s history.”
