Episode 165: The Innerspace of Outerspace with Mike Fiorito
“Music of the Spheres” Mixed Media Collage by Barbara Fisher 2026
Mike Fiorito is a really interesting and fun person to talk with. A music journalist and the author of several books, he is deeply knowledgable about the history of music and musicians from today all the way back to prehistory. His newest book, The Innerspace of Outerspace is a dive into a delightful musical rabbit hole, focusing on how music can open our minds and hearts to the Universe and everything in it, including those energies and beings we call The Other.
We had a great time talking about his book—for which I was honored to write the forward —and about how music has shaped every culture that has ever existed on this planet. We had a mystical, magical, musical time and I hope you enjoy the discussion.
In our discussion, we talk about a wonderful Tibetan singer whom we both love, Yungchen Lhamo. Her voice is angelic her songs are ethereal. If I’m ever too anxious to function and need a mental and spiritual reset, I put on her music, and sing with her,. In no time, my scattered emotions and racing brain calm down and I find myself just breathing and singing, and existing.
I hope if you’ve never heard her music, you seek her out and have a listen. Her songs are a healing prayer.
